Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice

Yesterday morning I took the universally disliked glucose tolerance test to see if I have developed gestational diabetes. This is one test I have been dreading for months. And given my penchant for sweets since getting pregnant, I was pretty nervous about whether I would pass or not.

I arrived at the lab around 8am, they took some blood, and then I had to drink a large plastic cup of a bright orange, super sugary, thankfully cold beverage. It tasted something like the cheap orange drink you can get in grocery stores, but it was as though they had forgotten that the cup they gave me was supposed to be diluted with enough water to make an entire gallon jug of the stuff. The nice lady that gave it to me said I had 5 minutes to drink it and I thought, “Why would I want to take 5 minutes? This is clearly not the kind of beverage you sip on and enjoy.” So I chugged it. And that sweet woman called me a superstar.

Then I went and found a chair in a comfortable corner down the hallway from the lab, popped in my headphones and Men In Black 3 on my laptop, and let myself succumb to Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, and Josh Brolin. Now before you judge my movie choice, let me say that this film was chosen primarily for its ability to distract and entertain without requiring any significant amount of brain power rather than its stellar storyline or thought-provoking, emotionally charged performances. And it was just the trick. Even though I felt a little woozy at times, the next hour passed quickly and soon enough it was time to pause the human vs. alien battle to go give some more blood. It wasn’t until I stood up and started to walk back to the lab that I realized how weird I felt. I was a bit unsteady on my feet and I definitely felt woozy, but it still wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. No raging headache, no desire to lash out at strangers, no throwing up. “At least not yet,” I thought. “Does this get worse?”

After round two of the blood draws, I settled back in with my movie and made myself as comfortable as possible. The next hour felt a bit longer, but still went by rather easily as I watched Agents J and K try to change the course of history. With only about 10 minutes left in the movie, I had to pause it yet again for my final blood draw. I didn’t feel nearly as woozy and weird when I got up this time and it was a relief to know the test was over as the gauze pad was packed into the crook of my arm and strapped there with medical tape. As I sat down in my cozy corner to watch the final scenes of the film, I unpacked my snack of sharp cheddar cheese, crackers, and an apple and I chowed down. It took a little while, but eventually my vacant gaze at the screen as the credits rolled started to sharpen and I began to feel more like myself again.

I got home around 11:30am and then immediately felt unbearably tired, so I took a nap. But other than the barely noticeable headache and extreme tiredness, I really didn’t feel much worse for the wear. After I got up, ate some more food, and relaxed for a bit, I really felt quite good. The cool, rainy morning had given way to a clear, blue-skied, balmy afternoon and I decided to go for a walk. It was truly lovely outside and I thoroughly enjoyed being able to take advantage of it and get some exercise. Of course, I kept thinking about the test and wondering when exactly I would find out if I was banned from sweet treats for the foreseeable future. But distraction had been the name of the game all day, so I kept at it.

Me, Zakk, and Emma (whom we are lucky to have visiting us right now) went to the Pacific Pie Co. for dinner. This delicious Aussie cafe serves up meat pies and other traditional fare, as well as the most delicious sweet pies in all of Portland. So after a rousing game of Mille Bornes (a French card game that Zakk and Emma apparently used to play as kids) and a lovely meal, I took a slice of rhubarb crumble pie home with us for dessert.

As luck would have it, I had an email indicating my test results were waiting when we got home. I wondered, “Should I eat the pie first and then check the test results? Or risk finding out that I failed the test and can’t eat the delicious pie that is waiting for me in a little brown box in the kitchen?”

Of course, I checked the test results first…

and then I celebrated by eating that delectable slice of pie.

Because baby girl and I are doing just fine, thank goodness!

We made it to the 3rd Trimester!

Today marks 28 weeks, which is the beginning of the 3rd trimester!
According to pregnantchicken.com, “Your baby is around 16 inches long and 2.5 pounds so pick up a random Chihuahua on the street to get an idea of what you’re dealing with.”

Ohio

Zakk and I went back to Ohio about a month ago. It was a bittersweet trip. Saying goodbye to Grandma Dee was difficult, but we are both so grateful that we got to share memories, tears, laughter, and hugs with all of Zakk’s family. We had some seriously delicious burgers, fries, and shakes and then (much to Zakk’s dismay, although I think he secretly liked it) watched Pitch Perfect, which was ridiculous and hilarious and a perfect way to spend a night with family. It’s been awhile since we have seen most of them and so I’m choosing to see it as a gift from Grandma that she brought us all together as a family. So thank you for that and for so much more, Grandma Dee. On our last day there, we went to the West Side Market and I had the most delicious gyro I might have ever eaten, which was a perfect way to close out our visit.

26 Weeks

Today marks 26 weeks for our baby girl! Supposedly, she is now about the size of an eggplant.

26 weeks - eggplant

Or an english hothouse cucumber, which I think makes Zakk oddly proud
(you know, because of his English heritage).

Since those two things don’t seem like they are the same size, I’ll give you the “real” numbers, as they make a little more sense to me: she is supposedly about 14-inches in length and a pound and two-thirds in weight.

And I definitely feel like my belly is becoming more and more noticeable each day.

23 Weeks Down, 17 Weeks To Go!

Apparently our little girl is now about 10.5 to 11.8-inches and 12.7 to 20.8-ounces, which is about the size of a grapefruit…

Grapefruit

or a mango, which is weird because we read that she was the size of a mango at 19 weeks when she was only about 6-inches and 8.5-ounces.

Mango

Just another reason not to trust these fruit comparisons anymore. So here’s what she supposedly looks like for real.

On Wednesday morning, Zakk’s grandmother, Delia Kuzda, passed away. Grandma Dee was a wonderfully spunky woman with a big heart and an easy laugh. She was kind and generous and we are heartbroken by this loss. We were both really looking forward to seeing her next weekend for our Ohio baby shower and are so sad we will not get one last hug from her, one last sweet smile, and that she will not be able to meet her first great-grandchild.

Zakk called to tell her we were pregnant and then she called me because she was so excited. She told me how thrilled she was for us and how she just knew we would be wonderful parents. Having raised three daughters herself, I was looking forward to hearing her stories and advice about our baby girl. But Zakk and I have so many wonderful memories of her and are grateful for all the time we were able to spend with Grandma Dee over the years.

Grandma Dee – June 27, 2010

A year before we made our cross-country journey to settle in Portland, OR, we moved out of our apartment in Lakewood, OH and into part of her home in Strongsville, OH. We enjoyed dinners with her, heard more stories about her life than we can probably recall, and made an even stronger connection to her than we previously had. Living with Grandma Dee gave us so much more time than we would have had with her otherwise and we are both truly grateful for that opportunity. She will live on forever in our hearts.

We happily obliged and now here is our story in pictures for you to enjoy.

21 Weeks

“Your baby now weighs about three-quarters of a pound and is approximately 10 1/2 inches long — the length of a carrot. You may soon feel like she’s practicing martial arts as her initial fluttering movements turn into full-fledged kicks and nudges. You may also discover a pattern to her activity as you get to know her better. In other developments, your baby’s eyebrows and lids are present now, and if you’re having a girl, her vagina has begun to form as well.” [From BabyCenter.com]

week21_carrot

But according to TheBump.com, she’s the size of a pomegranate.

week21_pomegranate

If you ask me, the fruit and veggie comparisons seem to be out of whack. First of all, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a 10.5 inch pomegranate. Seriously, pull out a ruler or measuring tape and try to imagine a pomegranate that big! Secondly, I don’t actually think she’s 10.5 inches long yet. I had another ultrasound today so they could try to get the few images they weren’t able to successfully get last time (by the way, we got the all clear – she looks great!) and the pictures the tech gave me indicate she is 18.2cm, which converts to 7.2 inches. We’ve been told before that the measurements they take during the ultrasound can be off a little, but I doubt it’s off by 3 inches. So all I can say for certain is that this is what she actually looked like today, all folded up on herself and moving around quite a bit. It looks like she’s practically kissing her knees! And don’t worry, she has feet. And arms. They’re just not captured in the image.

Baby Girl @ 21 Weeks

Baby Girl @ 21 Weeks

And this is what she supposedly looks like, if you could see her more realistically and less granularly (not sure that’s a word, but it’s my blog so I’m going with it). Except that the tech said her head and feet were down, not up.

Rendering of a baby at 21 weeks

My favorite moment of the day was finally getting to see AND feel her! It was always such a strange disconnect to be able to see her moving around during an ultrasound and know it was happening inside me, but not be able to feel a thing. She’s definitely a mover though. And I love, love, love feeling her move around!

A Glimpse Into Our Future…

We walked in the door and were greeted by the sound of screaming…and balloons. After all, it was a birthday party. And one of the first things said to us was, “Are you guys ready for this?” with a smirk and skepticism. All I can say is, I guess we’ll find out soon enough! Luckily babies don’t come out running around like crazy maniacs screaming their heads off with balloons clutched in both hands while waving them wildly in the air. Okay they might come out screaming and there might even be balloons, but at least they can’t run yet.
